For thousands of years, most details of ancient Egypt’s culture, history, customs, and beliefs, including the names of places, things, and individuals, were unknown. The knowledge was bound up in frustratingly indecipherable lines of pictographs (words or phrases in pictures) called hieroglyphs. This is the story of how we figured them out.
